Water Damage: Causes, Types, and the Threshold

Causes of Water Damage

Water damage can occur due to various factors, including:

  • Broken or leaking pipes
  • Flooding from storms or burst dams
  • Heavy rain or snowmelt
  • Faulty appliances, such as dishwashers or washing machines

Types of Water Damage

Water damage is classified into three categories:

  • Category 1: Clean Water: This type of water is clear and originates from a sanitary source, such as a broken water line.
  • Category 2: Gray Water: This water is slightly contaminated and may contain bacteria or chemicals. It can come from dishwashers, washing machines, or sewage backups.
  • Category 3: Black Water: This highly contaminated water poses a health risk due to the presence of bacteria, parasites, or chemicals. It can come from sewage backups, flooding, or storm damage.

How Much Water Does It Take to Cause Water Damage?
